Subject-Verb Agreement

Grade 2 · English Language Arts · Grammar and Mechanics · Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada

Lesson Summary

The subject and verb in a sentence must match in number: singular subjects need singular verbs.

Explanation

Every sentence has a subject (who or what the sentence is about) and a verb (what the subject does). They need to match. If the subject is one person or thing, the verb has a certain form: 'The cat runs.' If the subject is more than one, the verb changes: 'The cats run.' A good trick is to read the sentence out loud. If it sounds wrong, the subject and verb might not agree.
