Decimals are another way to write fractions that have denominators of 10 or 100. A decimal point separates the whole number part from the fractional part.

Explanation

A decimal uses place value to show parts of a whole. The first place after the decimal point is the tenths place, and the second place is the hundredths place. So 0.3 means 3 tenths, which is the same as 3/10, and 0.25 means 25 hundredths, which is the same as 25/100 or 1/4. You read 2.7 as 'two and seven tenths.' Decimals show up all the time in money: $3.50 means 3 dollars and 50 hundredths of a dollar, which is 3 dollars and 50 cents.
