The Muscular System

Grade 6 · Science · Body Systems · Ontario, Canada

Lesson Summary

Muscles contract and relax to move bones, pump blood, and help you breathe.

Explanation

The muscular system includes three types of muscle. Skeletal muscles are attached to bones and allow voluntary movements like walking and writing. Smooth muscles are found in organs like the stomach and intestines and work automatically to move food through your body. Cardiac muscle is found only in the heart and pumps blood without you having to think about it. Muscles work in pairs: when one contracts (shortens), the other relaxes (lengthens). This teamwork between muscles allows smooth, controlled movement.

Practice Questions

Q1: What are the three types of muscle tissue?
Answer: Skeletal muscle, smooth muscle, and cardiac muscle.
Q2: Why do muscles work in pairs?
Answer: Because muscles can only pull, not push. One muscle contracts to move a bone in one direction, and the opposite muscle contracts to move it back.
Q3: Which type of muscle is found only in the heart?
Answer: Cardiac muscle.
