Feudalism and Manor Life

Grade 7 · Social Studies · The Medieval World · Saskatchewan, Canada

Lesson Summary

Learn how the feudal system organized medieval society from kings to peasants.

Explanation

Feudalism was a social system in medieval Europe where land was exchanged for loyalty and service. The king granted land (called fiefs) to nobles, who promised military support in return. Nobles gave portions of their land to knights, and peasants (called serfs) worked the land in exchange for protection. Most people lived on manors—self-sufficient estates that included farmland, a village, and a lord's house. Life for serfs was hard, with long hours of farming and very little freedom to move or change jobs.

Practice Questions

Q1: In the feudal system, what did a noble receive from the king and what did they owe in return?
Answer: Nobles received land (a fief) from the king and owed military service, loyalty, and sometimes taxes in return.
Q2: What was a manor?
Answer: A manor was a large estate that included farmland, a village, and the lord's house. It was largely self-sufficient, producing most of what the people living there needed.
Q3: Why did serfs have very little freedom under feudalism?
Answer: Serfs were tied to the land they worked on. They could not leave the manor without the lord's permission and had to give a portion of their crops to the lord.
