What Are Multiples?

Grade 4 · Math · Factors and Multiples · Alabama, USA

Lesson Summary

A multiple is the result of multiplying a number by any whole number. Multiples are like the answers in a times-table.

Explanation

The multiples of 5 are 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and so on. You get them by multiplying 5 by 1, then by 2, then by 3, and so on. Every number has an endless list of multiples because you can keep multiplying forever. A quick way to check if a number is a multiple of another is to divide: if there is no remainder, it is a multiple. For example, 42 is a multiple of 7 because 42 ÷ 7 = 6.
