Energy Flow in Ecosystems

Grade 5 · Science · Ecosystems · Delaware, USA

Lesson Summary

Trace how energy moves from the sun through producers and consumers in an ecosystem.

Explanation

Almost all energy in an ecosystem starts with the sun. Producers, like plants and algae, capture sunlight and turn it into food through photosynthesis. When a consumer eats a producer, it gets some of that energy. Then when another consumer eats that animal, the energy passes along again. At each step, some energy is lost as heat. This is why there are usually more producers than top predators in any ecosystem.

Practice Questions

Q1: Where does most of the energy in an ecosystem come from?
Answer: The sun. Producers capture sunlight and convert it into food energy through photosynthesis.
Q2: Why is energy lost at each level of a food chain?
Answer: Because living things use some energy for their own life processes and release some as heat.
Q3: What is a producer? Give an example.
Answer: A producer is a living thing that makes its own food from sunlight. Examples include grass, trees, and algae.
