Dividing Three Digits by One Digit

Grade 4 · Math · Long Division · Georgia, USA

Lesson Summary

Divide three-digit numbers by a one-digit divisor. You repeat the divide-multiply-subtract-bring-down steps more times.

Explanation

The process is the same as with two-digit numbers, but you have one more digit to bring down. For 432 ÷ 4, start with 4 ÷ 4 = 1. Multiply 1 × 4 = 4, subtract to get 0, bring down 3. Now 3 ÷ 4 = 0 because 4 is bigger than 3. Write 0 on top, bring down 2 to make 32. Finally 32 ÷ 4 = 8. The answer is 108. Do not forget to write a 0 when the divisor does not fit into a digit.
