Lesson Summary

Learn about the period after the Civil War when the nation tried to rebuild and bring the South back into the Union.

Explanation

Reconstruction was the period from 1865 to 1877 when the nation worked to rebuild after the war. The government passed the 14th and 15th Amendments, giving formerly enslaved people citizenship and the right to vote. Black Americans were elected to public office for the first time. However, Reconstruction faced strong resistance in the South, where many white people opposed equal rights. After federal troops left the South, new laws called Jim Crow laws were passed to take away many of the rights Black Americans had gained.
