Transformations: Translations and Reflections

Grade 8 · Math · Geometry and the Pythagorean Theorem · Missouri, USA

Lesson Summary

Move and flip shapes on the coordinate plane without changing their size.

Explanation

A translation slides a shape in a straight direction without rotating or flipping it. Every point moves the same distance in the same direction. A reflection flips a shape over a line, like looking in a mirror. Common reflection lines are the x-axis, y-axis, or the line y = x. In both cases the shape keeps its original size and proportions—only its position or orientation changes.

Practice Questions

Q1: A point is at (2, 3). After a translation 4 units right and 1 unit down, where is it?
Answer: The new position is (2 + 4, 3 − 1) = (6, 2).
Q2: Reflect the point (5, −2) over the x-axis. What are the new coordinates?
Answer: (5, 2). Reflecting over the x-axis changes the sign of the y-coordinate.
Q3: Reflect the point (−3, 4) over the y-axis. What are the new coordinates?
Answer: (3, 4). Reflecting over the y-axis changes the sign of the x-coordinate.
