Dividing Two Digits by One Digit

Grade 4 · Math · Long Division · Nevada, USA

Lesson Summary

Practice dividing two-digit numbers by a single digit using long division. Work through each step carefully.

Explanation

When you divide a two-digit number like 75 by 5, start by asking how many times 5 goes into 7. It goes in 1 time. Write 1 on top, multiply 1 × 5 = 5, and subtract from 7 to get 2. Bring down the 5 to make 25. Now ask how many times 5 goes into 25. It goes in 5 times. The answer is 15. If the divisor does not fit into the first digit at all, you look at the first two digits together.
