Comparing and Ordering Decimals

Grade 5 · Math · Decimals · New Hampshire, USA

Lesson Summary

Compare decimals by looking at each place value from left to right.

Explanation

To compare decimals, line up the decimal points and compare digit by digit from left to right. Start at the largest place value and move right until you find digits that are different. The number with the larger digit at that place is the greater number. Adding zeros to the end of a decimal does not change its value, so 0.5 and 0.50 are equal.

Practice Questions

Q1: Which is greater: 0.35 or 0.4?
Answer: 0.4 is greater. Rewrite 0.4 as 0.40. Since 40 hundredths is more than 35 hundredths, 0.4 > 0.35.
Q2: Put these decimals in order from least to greatest: 0.8, 0.08, 0.81.
Answer: 0.08, 0.8, 0.81. Compare the tenths place first: 0.08 has 0 tenths, while 0.8 and 0.81 both have 8 tenths. Then compare hundredths: 0.80 < 0.81.
Q3: Is 2.50 equal to 2.5? Explain.
Answer: Yes. Adding a zero after the last decimal digit does not change the value. Both equal two and five tenths.
