Grade 7 · Math · Probability and Statistics · New York, USA

Lesson Summary

Learn what probability means and how to express it as a number between 0 and 1.

Explanation

Probability measures how likely an event is to happen. It ranges from 0 (impossible) to 1 (certain) and can be written as a fraction, decimal, or percent. To find the probability of a simple event, divide the number of favorable outcomes by the total number of possible outcomes: P(event) = favorable ÷ total. For example, the probability of rolling a 3 on a standard die is 1/6.

Practice Questions

Q1: A bag has 4 red, 3 blue, and 5 green marbles. What is the probability of drawing a blue marble?
Answer: Total marbles = 12. P(blue) = 3/12 = 1/4 or 0.25.
Q2: What is the probability of flipping tails on a fair coin?
Answer: P(tails) = 1/2 = 0.5 = 50%.
Q3: Is it possible for an event to have a probability of 1.5? Why or why not?
Answer: No. Probability can never be greater than 1. It must be between 0 and 1, inclusive.
