Evaporation and Condensation

Grade 2 · Science · States of Matter · West Virginia, USA

Lesson Summary

Evaporation turns a liquid into a gas. Condensation turns a gas back into a liquid.

Explanation

Evaporation happens when a liquid is heated and turns into a gas. You see this when puddles dry up after rain — the water evaporates into the air. Condensation is the opposite: a gas cools down and turns back into a liquid. You see this when tiny water drops form on the outside of a cold glass. Both of these changes are part of the water cycle that brings rain to Earth.
